The establishment of modernism.mk is driven by a shared vision to address the lack of online resources dedicated to Macedonian architecture and architects. While the internet has revolutionized access to information, the presence of Macedonian architects and their work is insignificant. We aim to rectify this imbalance and ensure that the valuable buildings and their architects receive the recognition they deserve.
Our primary objective is to promote and celebrate the modernist architectural heritage of Republic of North Macedonia by showcasing the works, philosophies, and accomplishments of Macedonian architects. By curating a digital repository of architectural archives, modernism.mk seeks to provide a comprehensive resource for researchers, students, professionals, and enthusiasts alike, both within the country and on the global stage. Our website will serve as a platform for promoting and appreciation of Macedonian architectural heritage, fostering a greater sense of cultural identity.
Through modernism.mk, we intend to showcase the diverse range of architectural styles, innovative design approaches, and urban planning strategies that have shaped the built environment of Macedonia. By highlighting the works of Macedonian architects, we aim to inspire future generations of architects, encouraging them to explore the rich legacy of their predecessors and draw inspiration from their achievements.
By recognizing the significance of architectural archives and investing in their digitization and maintenance, we can ensure the continued enrichment of architectural knowledge and the appreciation of our built environment.
At the beginning we’ll focus on Skopje, the capital city of North Macedonia. Skopje holds a special significance as a model city for Macedonian architecture, particularly due to its post-earthquake reconstruction efforts and the international solidarity it gathered during that period. As we progress, we will expand our scope to encompass other cities in North Macedonia, in order to make a full, complete digital archive of Macedonian Modern architecture.
